romantic
love is rarely brought up in the Lord of the Rings, with the notable
exception of Aragorn and Arwen; but undeniably there is much love
between companions to be found, agape certainly. Sam and Frodo,
first to mind, but one cannot forgot the love that was forged between
the Dwarf Gimli Elf-Friend and our favorite Elf, Legolas. if the rumor
is true, then certainly a great love was between them so that Legolas
brought Gimli over the sea to be the only Dwarf ever to set foot on
the undying lands. and though mortals achieve no immortality there,
how long did they linger together, and how aggrieved was the mind
of the son of Thranduil when his dear friend finally passed?
what of the
love that bound Legolas to this land until Aragorn Elessar finally lay down
and let go of his life to sleep forever?
or perhaps did
he love only the beauty of that great and
terrible Elf-Lord, Galadriel herself, even as his
companion Gimli certainly loved her?
or was it the love of the forest which
called his heart and refused him the
company of some Elf-maid?
